Berlin minister warns of violence at demos against pandemic deniers

The interior minister for Berlin, Andreas Geisel, warned of violence at demonstrations planned in the German capital on Wednesday.

“There are several radical-left demonstrations among them that have indeed announced they want to create chaos,” Geisel told broadcaster RBB-Inforadio. “But the police is well-positioned.”

Several demonstrations are planned in central Berlin on Wednesday, including demonstrations against those who deny the existence of the coronavirus pandemic.

A demonstration by the Querdenken movement, or Lateral Thinking, that was planned for Wednesday to protest against the government’s pandemic restrictions was banned last week.

Geisel said that police were ready in case demonstrators from the movement still make their way to the city centre, resulting in smaller demonstrations.

The German capital has imposed a general assembly ban for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day that a court ruled on Wednesday also applies to demonstrations.
