Rummenigge: Bayern looking at Upamecano, Boateng must wait

Champions Bayern Munich are looking into the signing of Dayot Upamecano from Bundesliga rivals RB Leipzig as part of an upcoming defensive reshuffle in the summer, according to chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on Thursday.

Rummenigge also said in a live video of the Bild paper that treble winner Jerome Boateng must wait for talks on a contract extension.

“Of course we’re looking into it, not only into this personnel matter but basically into what we want to do in which position and what we have to do,” Rummenigge said in reference to the French super talent Upamecano.

However, it’s “a bit too early” to assume Upamecano would move to Munich. “The player is in Leipzig until the end of the season at least,” Rummenigge said.

Rummenigge The 22-year-old defender has an exit clause in his contract which reportedly is 45 million euros (54.6 million dollars). But he also said that “in coronavirus times the financial situation is also an important matter” in squad decisions.

Looking at Boateng, the Bayern chief said they will talk with him but not now because “it’s too early for that.”

The centre-back’s contract expires after the season and he could leave on a free transfer, just like another key defender, David Alaba, who appears set to leave.

“Jerome is playing a good role again. The coach [Hansi Flick] is happy with him. Accordingly this question will have to be addressed in a meeting,” Rummenigge said.

“What does he want? What does he have the confidence to do? And what do the club trust him to do? And then a solution will be found,” he added.

Rummenigge also dismissed any suggestions that they could sell Germany winger Leroy Sane, who is having a difficult start, after just one season.

“He has a five-year contract. That would be nonsense. We need this type of player. Of course he will stay at Bayern and I’m convinced he will make his way here,” the 65-year-old said.
