Berlin (dpa) – Berlin police broke up an illegal gambling game with almost two dozen people, officers said on Saturday.
Police had been alerted by an emergency call on Friday night. A caller had observed “coming and going” to the flat in the Steglitz district.
In a two-bedroom flat, police encountered 22 people around midnight (2300 GMT Friday) who were neither maintaining a safe distance from each other nor covering their mouths and noses as required under regulations to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, police officers said.
According to the report, games had been set up in two rooms, with a large number of dice, cards and gambling chips.
The windows were covered with aluminium foil to prevent people from looking in. The owner of the flat was not present.
All of those present were charged with violations of the infection protection ordinance.
In addition, the officers started 20 preliminary proceedings for illegal gambling. A total of 8,000 euros (9,740 dollars) in cash was seized.
