15 art collectives working online on Germany’s next Documenta show

Germany’s Documenta, one of the biggest modern art exhibitions worldwide, is set to be more international than ever, with a growing list of groups helping to curate the show.

The exhibition takes place every five years, with the next event scheduled from June 18 to September 25, 2022, in the German city of Kassel.

Fifteen artists’ collectives are working towards that event from more than a dozen countries worldwide.

“The preparations for documenta fifteen are proceeding according to plan,” said the press office.

“documenta fifteen” is led by the Indonesian artist collective Ruangrupa, who call their approach to work “lumbung,” the Indonesian word for a communal rice barn.

They have invited institutions from around the world “to practice lumbung together.” They are now working with 14 collectives, though how many members are involved is unknown.
