Munich’s Mueller would welcome Germany comeback at Euros

Bayern Munich forward Thomas Mueller would be happy to return into Germany’s national team if he is needed for the European championships in summer.

“I am definitely hungry to chase titles in summer. We will see what will happen,” Mueller told Sky TV after Bayern’s 4-2 win over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday night.

Mueller was dropped from the team along with two other 2014 World Cup winners, defenders Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels, two years ago by coach Joachim Loew who is reshaping the team.

But Loew has said he may recall one or more of them for the Euro tournament postponed from last year owing to the coronavirus, if he believes that will help the team. He has ruled out bringing them back for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

“You should not interrupt a reshaping process completely but you can do it,” Loew said on Saturday. “Of course it is our duty to take the best players and the best team along to guarantee the biggest possible success.”

Mueller said he was keen “to take part with the lads of this generation” but said a decision was not for him to make.

“We will see what will happen. Whether the Champions League final, which is our clear aim, marks the end (of the season) or not we will see,” Mueller said.
