Poll: Quarter of Germans want Klopp as new national team coach

Almost a quarter of Germans in a new survey would like to see Juergen Klopp as the next national team coach after the departure of Joachim Loew, who will step down after the Euro 2020 in summer.

Of the 1,618 participants in the YouGov poll, 24 per cent named Liverpool’s Klopp their preferred candidate, while nine per cent chose Loew’s former assistant Hansi Flick, now at Bayern Munich.

Four per cent would like to see under-21 national team coach Stefan Kuntz as Loew’s successor, three per cent RB Leipzig’s Julian Nagelsmann and two per cent Chelsea’s Thomas Tuchel.

Around half of the participants gave no response. Only one per cent were in favour of a foreign coach, while six per cent were in favour of “another German coach.”

Klopp, however, has already said several times after Loew’s announcement on Tuesday he won’t be available in summer as he has a contract with Liverpool until 2024.

On Wednesday, Klopp suggested Ralf Rangnick should take the position. “That would be my first solution,” he told broadcaster Sky.

The majority of participants in the survey welcomed Loew’s decision to quit. Thirty-seven percent said it was a good decision, while 19 per cent thought that Loew should have quit long ago.

Only nine per cent said Loew should fulfil the terms of his contract and stay until after the 2022 World Cup, and 35 per cent didn’t respond.
