HU Hospital organized workshop on ear-surgery

KARACHI (HRNW) A special hands-on training workshop on ear surgery was conducted yesterday at “Temporal Bone Dissection and Ear Surgery Lab” at Hamdard University Hospital, Taj Medical Complex Karachi. It was the 7th workshop on Temporal Bone (bone situated behind and related to ear) dissection that was organized by the Department of ENT/Head & Neck Surgery, Hamdard College of Medicine & Dentistry and Hamdard University Hospital.

The training was supervised by a dedicated and expert faculty comprising of senior ENT surgeons. Prof. Dr. Ausaf Ahmed Khan Head of ENT while explaining the significance of these training workshops said: “The aim of this workshop was to give “Hands-on” training to the ENT doctors to learn the technique of ear surgeries especially Mastoidectomy (clearance of disease form a bone lying behind and related to ear). This training is done on cadavers as well as 3-D reconstructed bones where ENT surgeons learn and practice to dissect on temporal bones to learn various techniques of ear surgeries. He also said: “It is very hard to perform ear surgeries on actual patients unless one has learned and practiced it on cadaver’s temporal bone; otherwise, there are high chances of ending in dreadful complications, disfigurement and disasters.”
The “Temporal Bone Dissection and Ear Surgery Lab” of Hamdard University Hospital is one of its own kind facility in the country. The lab was established by Prof. Dr. Ausaf Ahmad Khan and inaugurated by Mrs. Sadia Rashid President Hamdard Foundation Pakistan in 2019. This is the only permanent and dedicated facility where hands-on training workshops are being organized on regular basis.
At this lab, there are five “work-stations”, all of which are equipped with microscope, camera, monitor, drill machines and necessary instruments & gadgets required to learn ear surgery on cadaver’s as well as 3-D reconstructed temporal bones.
Dr. Nasir Ahmad, Dr. Iftikhar Salahuddin, Dr. Sohail Awan, Dr. Anjum Navaid, Dr. Khalid Mahida, Dr. Tariq Zia, Dr. Shaukat Malik, Dr. Ismail Hirani and others from Hamdard, Aga Khan, Indus, Ziauddin, Sind Rangers and other hospitals provided training to the ENT doctors.
These workshops were started in January 2019, and till now seven workshops have been held. Around 40 ENT surgeons have attended these workshops as hands-on participants and observers. They belonged to all levels i.e. from ‘Postgraduate trainees to ‘Associate Professors’ and from public sector hospitals to private practitioners and gave a very positive and constructive feedback for these workshops.
