Germany’s Commerzbank nominates new board chairman

Commerzbank has nominated Helmut Gottschalk as new chairman of the board following an attempt to put an end to a prolonged leadership crisis.

The German bank announced on Sunday that Gottschalk, formerly board chairman at DZ Bank, would be proposed as new board member and then immediately elected as chairman by the supervisory board.

Gottschalk is taking over from Hans-Joerg Vetter, who stepped down on March 16 for health reasons.

Until the election, Vetter’s deputy Uwe Tschaege is leading the board.

One more vacancy remains on the board, after Andreas Schmitz resigned last week, prompting a postponement of the bank’s shareholders’ meeting originally planned for May 5.

But the bank said it expected the board would propose someone soon, in order for the shareholders’ meeting to be scheduled soon.
