Munich hopes to host Euro 2020 matches with half-full Allianz Arena

The German football federation DFB hopes to host the Euro 2020 matches in Munich with a half-full Allianz Arena, its head of organisation Philipp Lahm said.

“There are many different scenarios. I don’t think 100-per-cent capacity will be possible, you have to be realistic,” the former Bayern Munich and Germany captain told radio station Antenne Bayern on Sunday.

“Anything else could perhaps be possible. That’s why we plan to fill zero to 50 per cent of the stadium capacity,” Lahm said.

So far, the DFB and Munich haven’t revealed what Munich’s scenarios for the tournament would look like in concrete terms.

However, European ruling body UEFA said on Friday that Munich, where all group matches of the Germany national team and one quarter-finals game are to take place, is one of the four host cities who have to submit “additional information” by April 19.

Only then a decision will be taken about the venues in question hosting the planned games under coronavirus conditions.

The core issue is the admission of spectators, which eight host cities have already promised to allow. Lahm is optimistic that Munich could remain one of the venues.

“Hope dies last, as they say. We have to keep at it and work for it,” he said.
