German poll: Merkel’s conservatives lose ground to Greens, liberals

Germany’s ruling CDU/CSU alliance dipped two percentage points on the week to 26 per cent according to a poll by the Forsa institute published on Wednesday, while the Greens saw their support rise by a similar margin to 21 per cent.

The Social Democrats (SPD), currently in coalition with Chancellor Angela Merkel’s alliance of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with their Bavarian sister-party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), declined by one point to 15 per cent.

The liberal FDP was up a point at 13 per cent, while support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) on 10 per cent and the hard-left Die Linke (The Left) on 7 per cent was unchanged.

Armin Laschet, the CDU leader bidding to succeed Merkel after the September elections, saw his personal support fall by six points to 17 per cent in a theoretical direct vote for chancellor, falling behind Greens leader Annalena Baerbock on 19 per cent.

Germany goes to the polls on September 26 to elect the lower house of parliament, the Bundestag. The Bundestag then elects a chancellor. Merkel is stepping down after almost 16 years as chancellor.

The Forsa Bundestag poll of 2,501 respondents was conducted for the RTL media group between July 20 and 26. The chancellorship poll of 20,000 respondents was conducted in cooperation with Hohenheim University and the Ifo economic research institute.
