Von Bredow-Werndl beats mentor Werth for German dressage gold

Germany returned to the top of the individual Olympic dressage podium after 25 years on Wednesday at the Tokyo Games with Jessica von Bredow-Werndl beating her famous mentor Isabelle Werth.

The two had helped Germany win a 14th team event title on Tuesday before the 35-year-old von Bredow-Werndl, riding Delara, proved superior over-52-year-old Werth with an all but flawless performance.

The 2012 and 2016 gold medallist Charlotte Dujardin of Britain had to be content with bronze this time around.

“Sometimes I felt like I was doing a bit of a fire dance, on a knife’s edge,” von Bredow-Werndl said. “But it all worked out. I am super happy.”

Werth, the last German winner in the event back in 1996 who coached von Bredow-Werndl for a while in the past, missed drawing level with canoeist Birgit Fischer on a German Olympic record haul.

Fischer remains top with eight gold and four silver, Werth has seven gold and five silver.

But the veteran said she is not finished yet: “I still feel young. We will see how long the journey in international and Olympic sport will continue.”
