German town says farewell to the 20-year-old petrol station worker

The German town of Idar-Oberstein staged a memorial service on Thursday for a 20-year-old petrol station worker who was shot dead by a customer almost three weeks ago after reminding the man that masks were compulsory.

Family, friends and numerous other people said goodbye to the young man at the service in the western German town.

“The shocking act has left us all stunned and continues to leave our society deeply shocked and saddened, even beyond Idar-Oberstein,” said Lord Mayor Frank Fruehauf at the public memorial service in the town’s exhibition hall. Around 400 people had come to “remember Alex.”

It was hardly possible for anyone to imagine what “this senseless act” meant for the mother, the relatives and others affected, said Fruehauf.

It had been the family’s wish to mourn Alex together with many people in one place – without political speeches. “Today, Alex should be in the foreground … We are immensely sad.”

The funeral is planned at a later date for close family members.

According to the public prosecutor’s office in Bad Kreuznach, investigations into the background of the crime are ongoing.

According to current information, the petrol station employee had repeatedly pointed out the obligation to wear a mask under the current anti-cornavirus regulations to a 49-year-old man who wanted to buy beer without one.

The older man then shot the 20-year-old directly in the head.

He later told the police that he refused to follow the anti-coronavirus measures.

The 49-year-old German is in custody on suspicion of murder.
