After just over two months, the US has completed the evacuation of Afghans through its Ramstein Airbase in Germany.

The last aircraft in the operation left the hub in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate on Saturday bound for the US, according to the US Air Force.

The operation had begun after the hardline Islamist Taliban took power in Afghanistan. Since August 20, 34,900 Afghans have been flown out via Ramstein.

“I remain incredibly proud of the immense work the entire team has done throughout this operation,” said Commander Josh Olson.

The charge d’affaires of the US Embassy in Berlin, Clark Price, thanked Germany for its support. “We could not have done it without our German partners.”

The operation involved 6,500 US troops and NATO partners, according to the US Air Force.

Ramstein is the largest US airbase outside the United States. It was one of several hubs for the unprecedented evacuation operation.

The operation was completed with some delay. The onward flights to the US had been interrupted because a few cases of measles had been detected.
