Remains believed to be of German skier found after 38 years

US authorities believe they have recovered the remains of a 27-year-old German man who went missing in the Rocky Mountain National Park almost four decades ago.

Rudi Moder, from what was then West Germany, disappeared in the park 38 years ago. He had set out for a two-to-three day ski tour in February 1983.

He was reported missing six days later.

At the time of his disappearance, snowfall in the region hindered the search, with teams only able to find a snow cave with his sleeping bag, equipment and provisions inside. Further searches were unsuccessful.

In August 2020, a hiker came across human bones near avalanche debris, park public affairs officer Kyle Patterson said in a Thursday statement.

Rangers conducted an initial investigation but a fire forced them from the area, before snow fell.

Once they were able to return, park rangers discovered skis, poles, ski boots and other personal items that could have belonged to Moder, Patterson said.

Dental records were used to confirm the identity of the remains but were inconclusive, he said.

“Officials have worked extensively with the German government for repatriation, family notification and dental record analysis,” he said.
