Key software provider for German medical practices hit by hackers

Information technology service provider Medatixx, which supplies every fourth medical practice in Germany with software, has fallen victim to a ransomware attack.

The company says that in the course of the attack “important parts of the internal IT system” were encrypted. It has been working to resolve the issues since the middle of last week, the company said on Tuesday.

Medatixx offers various software products for doctors. So far, there are no indications that the attack has also affected the digital infrastructure of the health care system in Germany.

“The attack was directed against Medatixx as a company, not against our customers,” the company said in a statement, adding that the functionality of its practice management systems (PVS) was “not affected according to current knowledge.”

However, the company is recommending that its customers and sales partners should change their system passwords as a precautionary measure.
