German Olympic body wants outdoor sport guarantee amid pandemic

The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) has called on politicians not to prohibit outdoor sport again despite the rising number of coronavirus infections in the country.

“The mistake of the previous year, the wide-ranging closure of sports venues and the contact reductions that condemned around 27 million members of sport clubs and all other people in Germany to immobility, cannot be repeated,” DOSB president Alfons Hoermann said on Tuesday.

Ahead of a meeting on Thursday between federal and regional authorities, the DOSB is demanding an “outdoor sport guarantee for all,” it said in a statement.

It is said that for outdoor sport there should not be a tightening beyond the so-called “3G” rule – vaccinated, recovered or recently tested – while “2G” – vaccinated or recovered – was useful inside.

Children and young people would suffer particularly if their ability to exercise was restricted, physically and mentally, the DOSB said.

“The 90,000 sport clubs in Germany have shown in the past months that they can be really responsible with practical implementation in the situation, said Hoermann.
