Merkel set to have nine employees after leaving office

Angela Merkel is to have an office with nine employees once her chancellorship ends, according to a document on the subject submitted to a Bundestag committee that has been seen by dpa.

The Chancellery is requesting that Merkel be assigned an office manager, a deputy office manager, two specialist assistants, three clerks and two drivers.

In justifying the request, the document before the Bundestag’s standing committee says Merkel will continue “to perform tasks in the nation’s interest” once she ends her 16 years in office.

It is common for former German chancellors to have an office and employees financed by the state.

Merkel’s predecessor, Gerhard Schroeder, had two fewer employees after his chancellorship ended in 2005 than she is now supposed to receive.

Merkel, 67, is leading a caretaker government until her successor is sworn in.

The three parties that are negotiating a possible left-leaning government have said they hope to strike a coalition deal in December.
