Sold-out Berlin derby to go ahead with unvaccinated banned

The Berlin Bundesliga derby between Union Berlin and Hertha BSC can take place in front of a sold-out crowd, the German capital’s department for sport announced on Tuesday.

The match on Saturday at the An der Alten Foersterei stadium will admit only those vaccinated against or recovered from Covid-19. Unvaccinated persons cannot attend.

No limit will be placed on crowd numbers, meaning that 22,011 spectators will be able to watch the game on match day 12.

Berlin government officials discussed the health risks of the game in a meeting with representatives from the clubs.

Both clubs have asked their fans to get tested on the day of the match. Masks should also be worn to guarantee additional safety and an alcohol ban has been imposed.

Government and football club representatives also discussed security issues following riots at a derby in the Berlin district of Koepenick last December.

“Everyone is aware of their responsibility for a safe football match. The experienced Berlin police will also be in close attendance at this derby,” said state secretary for the interior Torsten Akmann.
