Bottom side Fuerth looking into the Bundesliga abyss

Promoted Greuther Fuerth are enjoying a horror Bundesliga season with just one point from 12 games and 10 defeats in a row. If there is no turnaround they could become the worst side in league history.

Greuther Fuerth coach Stefan Leitl did not look for excuses after the latest debacle for the Bundesliga bottom club.

“We played against an opponent who dominated us in every aspect,” he said after Saturday’s 4-0 meltdown at Borussia Moenchengladbach.

“You could see it right from the opening minute, and that’s why it was a deserved defeat.”

Competing in their second top flight season after a debut 2012/13 which they ended in last place with 21 points, Fuerth are rock bottom after 12 matchdays with zero wins, one draw and 11 defeats, plus a league worst goal difference of 8-33.

Ten defeats in a row leave them nine points from the relegation play-off spot and 11 from safety.

Like last year around Schalke’s horror campaign, memories go back to 1965/66 when Tasmania Berlin played the worst-ever Bundesliga season and were relegated with two wins and four draws.

Fuerth need improvement quickly if they want to avoid becoming the new worst club in the league.

“Everything that should normally distinguish us as a promoted team, the running and the tackles, wasn’t there,” midfielder Max Christiansen said.

Leitl, who has been in charge since Fenruary 2019, appears safe despite the awful season record.

Managing director Rachid Azzouzi has said that “I am convinced of the path we are taking,” as Fuerth aim to fight against the drop with sporting continuity and financial modesty.

The team was aware that the second BUndesliga season would be tough but not as bad as it is now.

“We all know where we stand, and that we had imagined a different situation,” goalkeeper Marius Funk said, again hoping that “the breakthrough will come” in the next game.

That is at home against mid-table Hoffenheim next weekend, and Leitl is convinced that “we will surely offer more resistance than against Gladbach.”

However, Fuerth have so far never won a home game in the Bundesliga, four draws and 13 defeats in 2012-13 and their lone draw (on matchday 2 against Bielefeld) and four defeats this term.
