Germany’s Porsche decides to build battery plant near Reutlingen

Porsche is to manufacture battery cells at a plant near Reutlingen to the south of Stuttgart, where the upmarket German car maker has its headquarters, Porsche subsidiary Cellforce announced on Friday.

The decision on the location was taken on account of the favourable geographical position between Reutlingen and Tuebingen, Cellforce said.

Production at the plant, which is to reach a capacity of 100 megawatt-hours per year, is to begin in 2024. According to earlier announcements, this capacity is sufficient for 1,000 cars.

Porsche announced plans for its battery production some time ago, but the location of the plant had not been decided.

The plant is receiving state subsidies totalling 60 million euros (68 million dollars), with two thirds coming from the federal treasury and the rest from the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Porsche holds a stake of 72.7 per cent in the Cellforce Group, with the rest held by Customcells based in Itzehoe in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein, a spinoff from the Fraunhofer Institute. Chemicals concern BASF was involved in developing the cells.
