Matthaeus hails Sane for Bayern resurgence

Leroy Sane has become one of Bayern Munich’s most important players after overcoming his initial difficulties at the Bundesliga champions, Germany icon Lothar Matthaeus said on Tuesday.

The winger, 25, struggled after his big move from Manchester City in 2020 but has five Bundesliga goals and five assists this season. Bayern are nine points clear at the mid-season break.

“Given the pressure that was on the boy and the difficult start with boos from his own fans, his current development is outstanding,” former Bayern star Matthaeus told Sky’s website.

“This is primarily down to him, but it is certainly also thanks to the encouragement and support of his coaches Julian Nagelsmann and Hansi Flick (with Germany),” Matthaeus said.

“Sane is now a top performer… and has become one of Bayern’s most important players.”

Matthaeus also reserved special praise for third-placed Freiburg in his half season review.

“What they have done for years now is unparalleled in the league. No big stars, but time and again a real team that now also achieves great results at a consistent level with really good football. Hats off to Freiburg!” wrote Matthaeus.
