Gladbach’s Eberl: Ginter must give his all before summer departure

Borussia Moenchengladbach sports director Max Eberl hopes for strong performances from Matthias Ginter in the second half of the season before the Germany defender moves on.

Ginter announced on Tuesday that he would not renew his contract which expires in June – a huge sporting and financial loss for the club.

It is not known where the 27-year-old World Cup winner from 2014 will play in the future, with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich and Serie A winners Inter Milan mentioned in the past.

Eberl hopes that this uncertainty, as well as the upcoming 2022 World Cup, will make Ginter even more ambitious which could also help Gladbach who are languishing in 14th place.

“He must now perform really well to find a new club,” Eberl told the Bild paper on Wednesday. “He wants to be at the World Cup in winter, so he knows he has to give his all.”

Ginter, who arrived at Gladbach in 2017 from Borussia Dortmund had vowed in his statement Tuesday on Instagram he “would do his utmost” he help Gladbach improve, which indicates a January departure is not on the table.

“It is very difficult to take this step after great years at Gladbach but I have decided to take another path in my career for my personal and professional development,” Ginter said.
