Greenpeace boss confirmed as Germany’s new climate envoy

The executive director of Greenpeace International, Jennifer Morgan, is to become the new German government’s special climate envoy.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock confirmed the announcement in Berlin on Wednesday.

“For me, this is a dream appointment and an important signal for international climate protection,” said Baerbock, who belongs to the Green Party, which has since December been one of the three parties in the coalition government.

Morgan, a US citizen who has fluent German and lives in Amsterdam, will take up the post as special envoy for international climate action on March 1.

She is considered an experienced and internationally well-connected climate expert, and has led numerous institutions working on climate change policy.

Martin Kaiser, executive director of Greenpeace Germany, welcomed Morgan’s appointment to an “important and pivotal new role.”

“With the appointment of the international Greenpeace boss Jennifer Morgan as special envoy for international climate action, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is sending a strong signal that the 1.5 degree target will be the guideline for Germany’s climate foreign policy,” Kaiser said.
