The Taliban, who seized power some six months ago, are looking for people who had collaborated with Western partners, according to a statement issued by Pro Asyl and other advocacy groups. They demanded “quick and decisive action.”

The groups urged German authorities to issues visas upon arrival to those Afghan migrants who already have an acceptance letter from Germany.

They also urged the federal government in Berlin to ensure direct “evacuation flights” from Afghanistan and said that security checks required for Afghans to enter Germany could be done after they arrive.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock had announced late last year that the government would accelerate the evacuation of people who are particularly vulnerable – including human rights defenders and former local employees of German forces in Afghanistan.

“You are not forgotten,” assured Baerbock. “We are working flat out to get everyone to safety.”

She also warned that Afghanistan is steering into “the greatest humanitarian disaster of our time,” referring to the severe famine in the country.
