PM Shehbaz promises to help Karachi with mass transport needs

Karachi (HRNW) Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Wednesday lauded the Sindh government’s “revolutionary” efforts for trying to provide better transportation to the people of Karachi. He has proposed the import of “thousands” of air-conditioned buses for Karachi and promised that he the Karachi Circular Railways (KCR) project would be put on the CPEC.

Shehbaz proposed that the air-conditioned buses will be operated by private transporters selected through bidding and the government would help them import the buses.

“The bidding process will be transparent and we will ask banks to give qualified transporters a loan,” he said, adding that the interest rate will be “absorbed” by federal and provincial governments.

On his maiden visit to Karachi after becoming prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif visited Mazar-e-Quaid and held meetings at the Sindh Chief Minister House. He also visited Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) headquarters in Bahadurabad.

Talking to the media after meeting Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, the prime minister said that the federal government will request the Chinese government to include the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) on China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

He said earlier the Chinese authorities were willing to accommodate KCR with CPEC but the situation changed later.

“We will request the Chinese government to make this project part of the KCR,” he said.

The prime minister also issued a 2024 deadline for the completion of the K-IV water project.

“The Sindh government has a project to meet the half requirement of drinking water for Karachi which will be completed by 2024,” PM Shehbaz said. “I insisted to them that the project should meet the full requirement.”

Shehbaz held a meeting Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and then chaired meetings on Karachi development projects.

The CM Sindh briefed him about the problems of Sindh province with a focus on Karachi.
