German foreign minister to visit Baltic states as Ukraine war wages

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock will set off on a three-day visit to the Baltic states of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania on Wednesday, a spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry announced in Berlin on Tuesday.

Baerbock will have discussions focusing around the reactions of the EU, NATO and the international community to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, according to the spokesperson.

The first stop will be the Latvian capital city of Riga for a meeting with her Latvian counterpart, Edgars Rinkēvičs.

A meeting with Prime Minister Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš, and a discussion with the three Baltic foreign ministers, Rinkēvičs of Latvia, Eva-Maria Liimets of Estonia, and Gabrielius Landsbergis of Lithuania, is also planned.

Along with the Russian war in Ukraine the security of the Baltic region will be a key focus of the talks.

On Thursday, Baerbock plans to continue to the Estonian capital of Tallinn, where she will again meet Liimets and Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, before continuing to Lithuania to meet President Gitanas Nausėda and Foreign Minister Landsbergis on Friday.

On Friday, Baerbock is also due to visit the NATO battle group in Rukla, which is led by German Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Andrä.

With a contingent of around 1,000 soldiers, the German Bundeswehr supplies the majority of the roughly 1,600 troops stationed there. The Bundeswehr has also been in charge of leading the battle group, known as the Enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group (EFP), since 2017.
