Rain emergency declared as water reservoirs full

ISLAMABAD (HRNW) – According to the spokesperson of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), a meeting of the National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) was held in which the situation of water reservoirs was discussed.

The NEOC meeting was presided over by NDMA acting chairman, Meteorological Department, Federal Flood Commission, PDMA and other departments participated in the meeting.

The Mangala and Tarbela dams’ authorities gave a briefing on the current situation of water reservoirs.
The participants were briefed about the current situation of the dams.

The meeting was told the Tarbela Dam had reached about 80 per cent of its full capacity while the Mangala Dam about 76 per cent of its total capacity.

There was no risk of flooding in the low-lying areas affected by both the dams, the participants were informed.

They were told there was a possibility of heavy rains in the catchment areas of the Indus and Kabul rivers from July 27-30.

The authority directed to continue the public awareness campaign to prevent possible effects of monsoon and Pakistan Indus Water Commission to continue monitoring the release of water in rivers and Indian dams.

The NDMA directed the concerned agencies to continuously monitor water bodies and rivers and ensure the safety of low-lying residents in case of rains in the catchment areas.
