Lok Leipzig raise funds with virtual match ticket sales record

German fourth-division club Lokomotive Leipzig have raised more than 120,000 euros (131,000 dollars) from ticket sales for a virtual game against an invisible opponent on May 8 – and have now set their sights on a European record.

Lok had been aiming to attract more virtual spectators than the 120,000 that are said to have attended their European Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final against Girondins Bordeaux in April 1987. The official figure at the time was 73,000 fans.

With that mark reached on the weekend from fans buying tickets for 1 euro each in the club’s online shop.

The figure rose to over 126,000 on Monday, the club is now eyeing the official European attendance record of 149,547 from Scotland’s 1937 match against England in Glasgow.

“We are thrilled by the worldwide support … And since the outstanding willingness to donate continues we are now aiming at the European record of almost 150,000 spectators,” Lok vice-president Alexander Voigt said.
