Germany’s hotels see overnight figures dive in March

Overnight stays in German hotels and similar establishments fell 53 per cent on the year in March, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported on Friday.

Overnight stays for the month came in at 15.6 million, Destatis said, taking hotels and similar establishments into account. The figures coincide with the start of the novel coronavirus pandemic and the ensuing measures taken to counter it, which forced many people to cancel travel plans and stay inside.

Stays by foreign guests fell 67 per cent to 2.0 million, while domestic travellers declined by 50 per cent to 13.6 million.

Overnight stays rose risen in the first two months of this year, resulting in a decline of 17 per cent for the first quarter to 72.4 million.
