Beckenbauer urges Loew to hand Mueller Germany comeback

Germany great Franz Beckenbauer believes Bayern Munich’s Thomas Mueller should be welcomed back into the national team.

Coach Joachim Loew decided to axe Mueller, Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng permanently in 2019.

“Thomas Mueller should play for Germany again. Jogi won’t have any problems if he brings him back,” Beckenbauer, 74, told the Bild website on Sunday.

Mueller, 30, was influential in Bayern’s 8-2 demolition of Barcelona, which set up a semi-final meeting with Olympique Lyon on Wednesday as the Bavarians chase only a second ever German treble.

“Mueller did not have an easy time with Bayern and sat on the substitutes’ bench for a long time. But you have to see that he has developed further,” added Bayern honorary president Beckenbauer.

“Mueller is now the absolute leader. His personality would certainly help the national team.”
