Munich imposes nightly alcohol ban after virus cases surge

Munich has banned drinking alcohol in public places during the night, after coronavirus cases crossed a previously established threshold in Germany’s beer capital, authorities said on Friday.

The southern German city recorded more than 35 infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days on Friday, health authorities said.

“This means the general ruling we enacted earlier comes into force,” a city spokesperson said.

Alcohol sales between 9 pm and 6 am (2000 and 0500 GMT) are henceforth banned, as well as the consumption of alcohol in public places between 11 pm and 6 am.

Drinking will still be allowed at venues serving food and at authorized events.

Other cities in the southern region of Bavaria had already imposed partial bans, including Nuremberg and Bamberg, where drinking in the parts of the city centre was banned on weekends.
