Hoffenheim, Spurs condemn racist insults against Ryan Sessegnon

Bundesliga club Hoffenheim have condemned online racist insults directed against their left-back Ryan Sessegnon, and were joined by his parent club Tottenham on Tuesday.

Briton Sessegnon, who is currently on loan from Tottenham, said on Instagram he was racially abused, showing some of the slurs and saying: “Honestly unbelievable. The craziest thing is I’m not even surprised anymore. Disgusting.”

Hoffenheim took to Twitter after Monday night’s 3-1 home defeat against Union Berlin.

“Our player Ryan Sessegnon was the target of horrific online racist abuse,” Hoffenheim said. “Hoffenheim stands for tolerance, integration and respect. We reject all forms of racism, discrimination and exclusion and say #NoToRacism.”

Spurs tweeted their support Tuesday, saying: “Everyone is with you.

“We are proud of the rich ethnic diversity that exists across out communities, fans, staff and players. We are driven by inclusion and equality for all and nobody should have to endure such repulsive abuse.”

Union also took to Twitter, saying: “Zero tolerance! #NoToRacism. Sending our support to Ryan Sessegnon and Hoffenheim.”

It is the latest incident of racism in German football. On Monday, Schalke were fined by the ruling body DFB because their fans racially abused Borussia Dortmund’s 15-year-old super talent Youssoufa Moukoko at a recent under-19 match.
