German police raid left-wing extremists after attack

Police raided three homes and arrested a woman suspected of being a left-wing extremist on Friday, German federal prosecutors said.

They accuse the 25-year-old woman, who was arrested in the eastern city of Leipzig, of playing a leading role in a group of around 10 extremists which has been in existence since at least the start of 2019.

She is accused of membership of a left-wing extremist criminal organization as well as causing serious bodily harm in combination with others, and disturbance of the peace.

Prosecutors charge the group with holding militant left-wing ideas, rejecting the democratic order, and rejecting the state’s monopoly on the use of force.

They allege the woman, along with up to 15 others, perpetrated an attack on the patrons of a pub in the eastern city of Eisenach, seen by the group as a meeting point for right-wingers, in October 2019.

The group assaulted the patrons with clubs, pepper spray and fists, causing considerable injury. They also broke windows and destroyed other property.

The woman is said to have led a subsequent attack on the pub’s owner and his companion. Yet another attack on a target in Leipzig was prevented by the police.

Prosecutors said they would seek a court order to have her held in custody.
