Dortmund beat Bremen 2-1 in Terzic debut, Stuttgart secure late draw

Borussia Dortmund bounced back to win 2-1 at Werder Bremen in Edin Terzic’s debut as interim head coach after Lucien Favre was dismissed following a 5-1 home defeat to VfB Stuttgart.

Dortmund had a good start and Raphel Guerreiro scored on 12 minutes but a wrong pass by the guests in the midfield awarded Bremen a goal by Kevin Moehwald before the break. Marco Reus secured Dortmund’s win in the second half.

Elsewhere, Marvin Friedrich and Taiwo Awoniyi set Union Berlin for a 2-0 win but two late goals by Sasa Kalajdzic rescued Stuttgart and secured the 2-2 draw for the hosts.

Union’s city rival Hertha Berlin held a goalless draw with Mainz in a game where both teams had no shots on target.

“We had a good game and lost two points. We should have won today but we must look ahead,” Hertha’s Krzysztof Piatek said after the game.

Bremen’s defence couldn’t clear Jadon Sancho’s attempt and Guerreiro got the rebound in front of the goal to shoot the ball past goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka.

But Dortmund’s wrong pass in the midfield led to a counter-attack from the home side. Maximilian Eggestein laid it off to Kevin Moehwald and he smashed a low shot past keeper Roman Buerki, who was celebrating his 200th Bundesliga game.

After the break, Reus scored from the spot for the win. Pavlenka dived the right way to save with one hand but the keeper was not fast enough to stop Reus’s second attempt.

“I thought it was very good and I’m proud that we gave everything from start to finish,” Terzic told TV broadcaster Sky.

Terzic decided to give young star Youssoufa Moukoko his first ever Bundesliga start and the 16-year-old had some good goal opportunities.

Union built their lead with an early header from Friedrich on four minutes. In the second half Awoniyi was completely free to score the second and set the path for the away win.

But Kalajdzic scored twice in five minutes to earn Stuttgart a point. His second goal was only validated after the referee checked the video assistant referee (VAR).

“This is very unpleasant,” Union’s captain Christopher Trimmel told Sky.

Goalscorer Friedrich added: “When you lead the score 2-0 until minute 85, then you wanna take the three points home.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Lars Stindl’s last effort to complete a hat-trick earned Borussia Moenchengladbach a late point at Eintracht Frankfurt as the teams drew 3-3 on Tuesday in the Bundesliga.

Gladbach had the lead with 14 minutes on the clock after Stindl took a free-kick over the barrier but Silva equalized from the spot after Stefan Lainer was booked for a handball.

Silva and Aymen Barkok turned the game around for Frankfurt and they were set to end a winless run of eight Bundesliga matches. But the game changed once captain David Abraham was sent off after a second yellow card.

With around 10 minutes left, Gladbach managed to secure the draw thanks to two late goals by Stindl.

“We invested everything and brought our emotions to the pitch. Had we played a few minutes longer we might have won,” Stindl said.

On Wednesday champions Bayern Munich will host Wolfsburg, while leaders Bayer Leverkusen visit Cologne. Other fixtures include Schalke v Freiburg, Hoffenheim v RB Leipzig and Arminia Bielefeld v Augsburg.
