Amazon workers walk off the job in Germany ahead of Christmas rush

Multiple German Amazon facilities reported their staff had walked off the job amid a labour dispute on Monday, just as more people than ever are relying on the internet retailer to get packages delivered for the Christmas holiday.

Work stoppages involving about 800 employees were reported at facilities in Rheinberg and Werne.

Labour union Verdi has called for a strike to get Amazon to recognize a pay deal that applies to small businesses and delivery operations in Germany. It is also calling for improved working conditions.

Striking workers have said they intend to stay off the job until Thursday, which is Christmas Eve, the main day of the Christmas celebration in Germany.

Amazon responded by noting that its employees benefit from “excellent salaries, excellent additional benefits and excellent career opportunities.” It said its top priority was their health and wellbeing.

It added that it expected no major disruptions to its deliveries, since most its workers were on the job as normal.
