Cardboard fans to fill stands at Nordic skiing world championships

Frankfurt (dpa) – Organizers of the Nordic skiing world championships in Germany’s Oberstdorf next month hope to fill the stands with cardboard cut-outs of fans.

With real fans not permitted to attend during the coronavirus pandemic, it is hoped the measure can nonetheless bring some atmosphere to events in cross-country, ski jumping and Nordic combined.

Fans can select an image for their cut-out for 19.50 euros (23.70 dollars) with the first 300 orders having their image signed by a gold medallist before being returned.

Organizers of the recent Four Hills Tournament in ski jumping had a similar initiative.

The Nordic worlds take place February 23-March 7.
