Upamecano’s agent says player wants to take ‘the next step’

RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano has decided he “wants to take the next step” and should leave the club in summer, his agent Volker Struth said on Sunday.

“The probability of a move in the summer is very high. He has decided for himself that he wants to take the next step,” Struth said in a football talkshow by broadcasters Sport1.

However, nothing has been decided yet, Struth said.

Upamecano has a contract with Leipzig until June 2023 and according to Struth only German champions Bayern Munich and English clubs could afford the buy out clause of 42.5 million euros (51.5 million dollars).

“Spanish clubs can’t afford that at all,” Struth said.

Bayern have already stated a clear interest in the player and on Saturday sports director Hasan Salihamidzic confirmed a meeting with Struth.

Leipzig sporting director Oliver Mintzlaff also confirmed talks with Bayern chief Karl-Hainz Rummenigge.

“I can confirm that I spoke to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on the phone this week. He said there’s a interest in the player,” Mintzlaff said.

“We have agreed that if the situation becomes more concrete we will talk again and be informed in advance. That hasn’t happened yet. I’m happy Upamecano has shown a very strong performance. We’ll see about the rest, he has an exit clause, but the important thing it that we have him for at least this season,” Mintzlaff added.

According to media reports Liverpool and Chelsea are the two Premier League sides who also have an eye on Upamecano.

The talented 22-year-old centre-back came to Leipzig in 2017 from Red Bull Salzburg for a fee of 10 million euros.
