Germany reports hundreds of violations of coronavirus travel rules

The Federal Police have recorded hundreds of violations of tightened rules on travelling to and from Germany in the last few days, the Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.

Between January 24 and 31, 802 violations were reported on 215 flights from areas considered high-risk or where highly contagious coronavirus variants have spread, an Interior Ministry spokesperson told dpa.

According to the ministry, 309 passengers arrived in Germany who had not filled in the mandatory entry registration form and 493 passengers did not present a negative coronavirus test upon arrival.

The cases concern flights from areas with very high infection rates and areas where more infectious coronavirus variants are prevalent, as passenger have to comply with stricter rules.

The German government on Sunday also implemented a transportation ban for airlines as well as train, coach and shipping companies from virus mutation areas.

Airlines are now in principle only allowed to transport people with the right to reside in Germany from those areas. The Federal Police recorded eight violations of that rule since it came into force, the Interior Ministry said.
