RB Leipzig request entry permission for Liverpool for CL match

RB Leipzig have officially asked German authorities to grant Liverpool entry into the country for their Champions League on February 16.

Spokesman Till Mueller said on Tuesday the formal request was made on Monday to the federal police and that they were waiting for an answer.

Germany on Saturday closed its borders for airline passengers arriving from regions where coronavirus variants are spreading, including Britain, unless they are German citizens or foreigners who reside in Germany. The measure applies until at least February 17.

An interior ministry spokeswoman said Monday that at the moment there was no special rule for football clubs within the regulations.

According to coronavirus rules for the Champions League, Leipzig must inform the ruling body UEFA by February 8 whether the game can take place as planned in their stadium on February 16.

If not, Leipzig must propose a neutral venue. It would also be possible to play the game in Liverpool and the return leg, set for March 10, in Leipzig. If Leipzig are unable to find a solution Liverpool could be declared 3-0 winners.
