Schalke to keep main sponsor even in case of relegation

Russian energy sector company Gazprom will remain Schalke main sponsors for at least three more years, even if the Bundesliga bottom club is relegated into the second division.

Schalke said on Tuesday that Gazprom would have had the right to stop the partnership in case of relegation but that it would now continue until 2024.

Gazprom are said to have paid Schalke around 20 million euros (23.6 million dollars) per season lately.

The club is struggling with big debts of more than 200 million eurus and languishes in last place with only one season victory, 14 points from safety with eight games left.

“The contract extension with one of our most important partners Gazprom carries great significance for Schalke 04 and shows trust, especially in difficult times. We are very grateful for that,” Schalke board member Alexander Jobst said.

“At the same time, through this validation from our main sponsors, we feel the expectation and stimulus to get Schalke 04 back on the path to success on the pitch.”
