DFB: no earlier replacement for Loew despite North Macedonia shock

The German football federation (DFB) won’t consider replacing coach Joachim Loew earlier, even after the disastrous 2-1 defeat to North Macedonia in the World Cup qualifying last week.

“The disappointing match against North Macedonia doesn’t change our timetable,” DFB president Fritz Keller told the Bild newspaper website on Tuesday.

“Especially since we have clearly stated from the beginning that we will have a new coach by the time the World Cup qualifying continues in September and will not comment on the ongoing process,” he said.

In March, Loew had already said he will leave the national team after the Euro 2020 in summer.

DFB director Oliver Bierhoff also continued to support Loew, 61, after the embarrassing defeat.

“Jogi Loew has the competence and experience to lead the team successfully into this Euros. Jogi is highly motivated to make his last tournament as national team coach a success,” Bierhoff said.

Since Loew announced his resignation, Bierhoff has been in contact with candidates and their entourages, according to his own information.

“There will be further talks and meetings in the coming weeks. My plan is to propose a successor to the DFB executive committee around the time of the Euros,” Bierhoff said.

Playing against North Macedonia, Germany conceded their first defeat in a World Cup qualifier in almost 20 years. They’re currently only third-placed in the group, a position which would leave them out of the 2022 World Cup.

“Of course we shouldn’t lose against North Macedonia. Once again, a lack of chances, cleverness and freshness meant that we didn’t decide the game in our favour early on. Once again, we got ourselves into trouble unnecessarily,” Bierhoff summed up.
