Veteran assistant Gerland confirms he’ll leave Bayern Munich

The era of long-serving assistant coach Hermann Gerland at Bayern Munich will soon come to an end as the 66-year-old confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season.

Gerland, speaking to the Bild newspaper on Tuesday, did not give reasons for his departure. Head coach Hansi Flick will also leave at the end of the campaign with RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann replacing him.

His exit is another significant change at Bayern, believes former player and World Cup winner Lothar Matthaeus.

“Also because (chairman) Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is slowly but surely handing the reins to Oliver Kahn,” Matthaeus wrote in a column for Sky.

“All the great coaches have profited in the end from Gerland’s eye, experience and feeling for this club than most know. Whether (Louis) van Gaal, (Pep) Guardiola or (Jupp) Heynckes.

Next year the 51-year-old Kahn will replace the 66-year-old Rummenigge as club chairman.

Kicker magazine initially reported Gerland’s departure while Miroslav Klose will also leave his role as a Bayern coach before next term.

Gerland has been with Bayern in various roles since 2001.
