UO holds webinar on environmental issues

Okara (HRNW) The University of Okara’s Department of Environmental Sciences organized a webinar on “Global Trends in Combating Environmental & Agricultural Issues”. The event was moderated by the department’s In-Charge, Dr Muhammad Iqbal. The keynote speakers included Dr Sajjad Raza from China, Dr Muhammad Arshad from NUST Islamabad and Dr Olsegan Abbas from Singapore.
Talking about the excessive use of fertilizers in Pakistan’s agriculture sector, Dr Raza told, “Out of nitrogen, that is used on crops in Pakistan, only 53 percent is utilized while the rest of it is absorbed in environment that eventually disrupts the ecosystem”.
Discussing the use of nanoparticles in agriculture, Dr Arshad argued, “Nanoparticles are of great importance in food production, food processing, nano fertilizers and nano pesticides. Worldwide, nanotechnology is being used for the treatment of waste water to preserve ecosystem.”
Dr Abbas said, “In next 30 years, the Asian region will face serious threats in food, energy and water sectors and in order to avert these threats, we need to design technologies for the treatment of water”.
Dr Iqbal thanked the UO Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Muhammad Zakria Zakar, for providing the opportunity to hold that webinar. At the end of the event, a walk and plantation was done in collaboration with the Environment Department Okara.
