Poll: Germany’s Greens slide further to below 20 per cent

Germany’s Greens saw their support dip below 20 per cent in a new opinion poll published on Tuesday, confirming a downward trend after several months of surging support.

On the weekend, the party confirmed Annalena Baerbock as their candidate for chancellor in September’s federal elections.

The Insa poll commissioned by the mass-circulation Bild newspaper put support for the party at 19.5 per cent, one percentage point down on the week.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative alliance, comprising the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and their Bavarian sister-party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), gained a point to take a clear lead on 27.5 per cent.

The Social Democrats (SPD), currently part of Merkel’s ruling coalition, were also up one point at 16.5 per cent.

Support for the liberal FDP was unchanged on the week at 13.5 per cent as was that for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) at 11.0 per cent.

According to the poll of 2,038 respondents taken between June 11-14, The hard-left Die Linke saw its support fall by one point to 6.0 per cent.

Support for the Greens surged in the spring, when they were polling virtually level with the CDU/CSU alliance, with speculation the party could for the first time take ove the chancellery.

Merkel is standing down at the election. Armin Laschet is the new CDU party head and will be its candidate for chancellor.
