Deschamps praises Germany before Euro 2020 opener in Munich

World champions France are looking forward to their Euro 2020 opener against Germany in Munich on Tuesday and have a lot of respect for their opponents.

“It’s going to be a huge game. For Germany and also for us,” coach Didier Deschamps told a news conference on Monday.

Deschamps said that Germany has “one of the best goalkeepers in the world” in Manuel Neuer and “a lot of individual quality” in attack.

Even though the coach believes that no decision will be made on Tuesday as to who will advance to the knock-out stages, France captain Hugo Lloris thinks “it’s a key game right away.”

“Germany are currently in a moment of rebuilding. But they have great players, they are a great football nation, they are very motivated – and they are playing at home. That’s why we expect a very difficult game,” Lloris said.

The goalkeeper also praised “everyone who provided direct help on the pitch,” to Denmark’s Christian Eriksen, who collapsed during their Euro 2020 opener against Finland on Saturday and had to resuscitated on the pitch.

“This event could have ended much more dramatically. Those were bad images that worried me a lot,” said Lloris, who played with Eriksen at Tottenham from 2013 to 2020.
