Loew doesn’t rule Goretzka out of Euro 2020 opener against France

Germany coach Joachim Loew hasn’t ruled midfielder Leon Goretzka out of their Euro 2020 opener against world champions France on Tuesday in Munich.

“We agreed we would talk after the final training session and make a decision,” Loew told a news conference on Monday.

Loew said Goretzka took part in the training session on Sunday and made “a very good impression,” not showing any effects of a recent thigh injury which kept him out of the pre-tournament friendlies.

“According to our medical department, there is no risk,” Loew said, but added: “He had a very long pause.” Goretzka is not considered a candidate to start.

Asked about who will be the second goalkeeper in case captain Manuel Neuer is out of action, Loew said this will be decided game by game but confirmed Bernd Leno will be the back-up against France.

According to UEFA rules, coaches can list 23 of the 26 players available for the tournament for each game. Loew believes this was a “wrong decision,” because every player deserves to be at least on the bench.

After a disappointing performance in the 2018 World Cup, when Germany left the competition in the group stage, Loew will lead the team for the last time. He will leave after the Euros, when former Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick will take over.

Loew recognized the “past years were not easy, but we’ve had improvements, you can see it day by day.

“We prepared well in the last few days. The team spirit is great, everyone is very hungry,” he said.
