After pandemic slumber, Berlin’s Berghain is ready for garden parties

There’s no better sign that Germany is coming out of its pandemic slumber than the announcement that there will once again be dancing at Berlin’s legendary techno club Berghain starting Saturday.

While just the outdoor dance floor is reopening at this point – meaning there’s a chance the weather might ruin your best club outfit – you can at least be guaranteed a fresh DJ programme every weekend.

Admission is limited to people who can prove that they’ve been vaccinated, recovered or tested negative – and who can find mercy from the notoriously selective bouncers. Once clubgoers are in, they will have to wear a face mask in all parts of the Berghain garden.

Berghain’s sexually permissive halls have been closed due to the pandemic since March 2020, and like the rest of Berlin’s nightlife, has been suffering badly: Such establishments were the first to close and seem to be among the last to be permitted to completely reopen.

The Berghain garden had at least opened for a brief spell last summer before being forced to shut again. And for those interested in art, the interior of the club that’s been named one of the best in the world is hosting an art installation that’s been open since June.
