Fairytale bridge restored in Germany’s Lusatia

A fairytale bridge beloved by photo-snapping tourists, one of the best-known landmarks in the far-eastern German region of Lausatia, has been restored to its former glory after years of restoration.

The restored Rakotz Bridge in the Azalea and Rhododendron Park in Kromlau in the state of Saxony was opened on Saturday by Saxony’s Premier Michael Kretschmer.

The bridge, with its striking arch, is a popular Instagram photo motif because the reflection forms a perfect stone circle with the water. In the vernacular it is also called the Devil’s Bridge.

More than 4 million euros (4.75 million dollars) from the federal and state governments have gone into the restoration and reconstruction of the stone structure made of boulders and basalt in recent years.

“The restoration secures this important cultural structure for the coming decades,” Kretschmer stressed.
