Demonstrators protest planned clearing of Berlin squat

Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets of Berlin on Saturday to protest against a planned move to clear a group of construction trailers forming a left-wing settlement on land they don’t own.

Some firecrackers were lit as a group of people – some dressed in black and with their faces covered – marched through the city’s Kreuzberg district and into Friedrichshain. A large police contingent kept an eye on their movements.

A dpa reporter on the scene estimated about 1,000 people on the streets.

The settlement is set to be cleared on October 15, though the residents have said they won’t be cleared without resistance.

The trailers form a settlement next to a long-time squat dubbed Koepi. It is one of the last of such left-wing radical establishments still operating in the city.

In June, a court had ordered it be cleared, which would free up the 2,600-square metre area, which is home to about 30 people.
