“It can not and must not be the international community’s goal to watch as 40 million people fall into chaos either because electricity cannot be supplied or a financial system is non-existent,” Merkel said on Tuesday following a special G20 summit to address the situation in the war-torn country.

“We all have nothing to gain if the entire monetary system or financial system collapses in Afghanistan, because then humanitarian aid can no longer be provided either,” Merkel said.

She noted that the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have a major task to prevent the country’s financial system from collapsing.

Merkel confirmed Germany would provide 600 million euros (692 million dollars) in aid, as pledged at the September donor conference. Alongside humanitarian help, Merkel also said a swift inoculation campaign was needed.
